Husbandry Course - An Introduction to Caring for Alpacas

Join us on our farm in Cowley, near Cheltenham, for an informal day experiencing what it is like to look after these delightful animals.

There is a good balance of fun and informative sessions and it is a great way to find out if Alpaca ownership is right for you - keeping them either as pets or for breeding.

If you are already sure that you would like to join the growing number of Alpaca owners, then this is an excellent opportunity for you to learn, in a small group, all that you need to know about starting out and will be a good grounding in their day to day care. You will go away with the confidence to tackle most simple husbandry tasks.

Refreshments are provided

We split the day between being outside handling the alpacas and sitting down under cover explaining the details. There will be plenty of time for your questions throughout the day.

Be sure to bring some appropriate, warm clothes and clean wellies.

The course costs £75 per person.    

We will cover the following topics:

  • The Andes-Where it all started
  • The two types of Alpaca and it's cousins
  • Background to alpacas in the UK
  • What makes the perfect alpaca?
  • How much land do you need? - pasture management, fencing and shelter
  • What  they eat and day to day routines.
  • Handling-learn how to fit a halter and lead an alpaca
  • Husbandry-health checks including body condition scoring, toenails and teeeth and injections.
  • Breeding and weaning
  • Fleece-shearing and processing
  • Agistment

Learn to Spin Workshops £75

COURSE DATES

Spinning Workshops are all held here at Korinn Farm, 10am to 3.30pm with lunch and all materials provided. We usually run these workshops with groups of 4 people but one to one tuition is available, if you would prefer. Please contact us for details.

On the Day We will

  • Meet the alpacas to see and discuss the fleece before it is shorn
  • Raw fleece preparation - skirting, grading and carding by hand and machine
  • Use of spinning wheel and other equipment
  • Having spun your chosen colour of fleece you will finish by plying your yarn and will have a skein to take home with you.

If you have your own wheel or other equipment please feel free to bring it along with you.

Felting - beginners day £75 plus £10 for Materials

After meeting the alpacas and seeing the different fleece types, you will learn about:

  • How and why wool felts
  • Choice of fibre for felting
  • How to use felt making equipment
  • Basic feltmaking techniques - both flat and 3 dimensional

You will be able to create one or possibly two finished pieces of felt work by the end of the day.

 

Felting course

Natural Dying Workshop £75 Plus £10 for Materials

Friday 15th April 2022 - SOLD OUT  

A day of learning how to get the very best results using natural dyes with Alpaca Fleece. Many of the techniques will be equally useful with other fibres.

You will be shown how to prepare and blend different plants for stunning results. You will also learn to mix and blend and combine colours.

At the end of the workshop you will have a selection of wonderful coloured yarn to take away with you.
